Frigate Bird
Adult Male
Short
Description
Here is the third painting about Fregata magnificens. Here is an adult male with his gular sac in full display. The males use this structure that is usually retracted when they are trying to attract females to mate. The gulas sac is a very colorful, very flexible membrane that can be inflated to show the ‘fitness’ of the individual in question and how attractive he is to the females looking for mates. In this case, I was experimenting with dripping with no solid areas. I gave this small painting to a local animal rights organization called RAYA (Red de Ayuda a los Animales), where it hangs in their reception.
