Frigate Bird
Juvenile
Short
Description
As a young Marine Biologist back in the 1980’s I decided to study the behavior of a local species of Frigate Birds: Fregata Magnificens. For an entire year I observed these creatures every day from dawn to dusk at a colony on a small Island called Isla Fuerte in the Colombian Caribbean. I intended to describe their behavior to understand more about the species. I made what is called a partial Ethogram (A list of species-specific behaviors) of F. magnificens and wrote a thesis as my final work to graduate from the University after 5 years of attending classes. They are beautiful birds and I have been fascinated by their many abilities, including long-distance soaring, kleptoparasitism, and prolonged fasting. They are considered the most efficient flying organisms on Earth by many ornithologists. I decided to paint a series dedicated to them. This is the second painting of that group.
