La Katrina
Death is always upon us
Short
Description
In 2006, while living and working in Mexico, in the town of Aguas Calientes, the birthplace of Jose Guadalupe Posada, the quintessential Mexican illustrative artist whom I have admired since I was a young person, I became very familiar with his most famous illustration: La Katrina. That year, there was a festival called El Festival de las Calaveras and the whole city was covered with posters of La Katrina. For a month I plotted to get (steal) one of those posters printed on plastic canvas as an advertisement for the festival. They were placed very high up in poles and I was already giving up on them when I saw a crew of workers taking them down to discard. I asked for one from one of the guys, and he gave it to me without hesitation. On top of that poster, I did this painting using dripping and adding some UV pigments with a sentence that can only be seen when you shine UV lights on the piece. This painting was acquired by my very good Spanish friend Gavi from Sevilla. We were working together in Mexico at the time and he was witness to my efforts to try to steal one of those posters ;-) that was ultimately given to me for free. I saved it from the trash, basically!
