Sierra Nevada

Description
The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is Colombia's tallest mountain, at 5,775 meters above sea level. It is also considered one of the highest coastal mountains in the world because the distance from the closest shore to the summit is only about 50km. The summit still has some rare tropical glaciers, but they are doomed to disappear soon due to climate change. It is an isolated mountain system from the Andes range. It has many different ecosystems, from tropical dry forest to snow peaks and everything in between. Unfortunatelly is has been one of the most violent places in Colombia. The painting depicts the mountain from above in a technique I have been using where I wrack the canvas before I start laying on paint.
